Ottobre 1944. Saul Ausländer è un ebreo ungherese deportato ad Auschwitz-Birkenau. Reclutato come sonderkommando, Saul è costretto ad assistere allo sterminio della sua gente che 'accompagna' nell'ultimo viaggio. Isolati dal resto del campo i sonderkommando sono assoldati per rimuovere i corpi dalle camere a gas e poi cremarli.
